This short walk marks the transition from the famous North Norfolk coast to the quieter, less-visited stretch heading south. From Cromer's Victorian pier, the clifftop path leads to Overstrand โ once nicknamed the village of millionaires for its extraordinary collection of Edwardian villas built for London's wealthy elite. A perfect half-day walk with excellent lunch options at either end.

The Route
Stage 1 โ Cromer to the Lighthouse
1 mile ยท 25 mins
Begin at Cromer seafront โ take a moment to look back at the pier before setting off. The famous Victorian pier was built in 1901 and stretches 151 metres out to sea. Lifeboat Station at the end of the pier is the only one in the country located on a pier. Walk east along the promenade, past the distinctive red and white Cromer Lighthouse โ built in 1833 and still active, its light visible 21 nautical miles out to sea. The path climbs from the seafront to the clifftop after the lighthouse, and the views back to Cromer's church tower and pier are excellent.
Stage 2 โ Clifftop to Overstrand
2 miles ยท 1 hour
The clifftop path south of Cromer is one of the less-walked sections of the Norfolk coast โ quieter and more intimate than the big open stretches to the west. The path follows the cliff edge closely, with the sea below and farmland and gardens above. The cliffs are clay and chalk, actively eroding โ on clear days you can see where previous sections of path have been lost. The approach to Overstrand is marked by the appearance of large Edwardian and Victorian villas in their wooded gardens above the cliffs โ a visible reminder of the village's extraordinary history as a retreat for London's Edwardian upper class.
โ ๏ธ Cliff erosion: The cliffs on this section are actively eroding. Keep to the marked path and well back from the cliff edge. Never descend the cliffs โ the clay is unstable and collapses without warning.
Points of Interest

๐
Cromer Lighthouse
Cromer Lighthouse stands on the clifftop behind the golf course, about half a mile from the sea was built in 1833, replacing an earlier light on the church tower. It stands 18 metres tall and its light is visible 21 nautical miles out to sea โ crucial for ships navigating the treacherous Cromer Shoal. The lighthouse is still active, managed by Trinity House. The clifftop path passes close by โ look for the characteristic red and white daymark pattern.

Overstrand โ The Village of Millionaires
Overstrand earned its extraordinary nickname in the Edwardian era when it became the fashionable retreat of London's wealthiest families. Winston Churchill's parents rented a house here; the financier and philanthropist Lord Hillingdon built the magnificent Sea Marge hotel (now a private hotel). The village was developed largely by the famous Arts and Crafts architect Edwin Lutyens, who designed several of the large houses. The clifftop road through the village still has an atmosphere quite unlike any other Norfolk coastal village โ grander, quieter, slightly faded and all the more interesting for it.

St Martin's Church, Overstrand
The church at Overstrand is partly the work of Edwin Lutyens, who restored and extended the medieval structure in 1911. The combination of medieval flint work and Lutyens' Arts and Crafts additions makes for a fascinating building. The churchyard has some fine views over the village and coastline, and several graves of notable Victorian and Edwardian figures who retired to the village. Usually open during daylight hours.
